WHATS THE PROPER WAY TO HOLD A PIT BULL PUPPY

Posted by LEE BOOTH on May 21, 2011 at 9:30 AM Comments comments (0)

Most people beleive that the proper way is by liftting a small puppy by sliding your hand under its tummy. If the puppy is large, use both hands and support the puppy’s head. Cradle a puppy’s legs close to its abdomen. When a puppy is picked up and its tiny legs flail in the air, it becomes instantly frightened and it may protest. Gently snuggle the puppy’s legs with both of your hands, creating a feeling of safety for the pup.I have seen several breeders refuse to sell some people puppies based on the way they hold the pup.

Some breeders and owners hold their dogs by the excess flap of skin on the back of the puppies neck. They claim they are imitating the way the mother would hold the pups in a natural setting. They also beleive  that if you hold a puppy by the back of its neck and it screams then there is a good chance the puppy is probalby not of pure blood.

Here at Booth Kennels we cradle all our pupppies by their tummy because we have no need to perform a pure blood test because we know all our dogs are.We love all our adults and puppies the same and we want to hold our puppies in a manner that accuratley reflects our love for them.

How do you hold your pups?Would you let someone hold your puppies by the back of their necks?

IS THEIR A STANDARD FOR THE AMERICAN BULLY?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on May 18, 2011 at 12:26 PM Comments comments (3)

People who support the ABKC argue that, each class adheres to the Standard Class written standard with some amendments. They argue that All dogs are judged according to the written standard and their age is taken into consideration to the written standard to that variety. They state that each class must meet the written standard and also meet the height requirements for that specific class.

People who beleieve that the ABKC does not have a proper standard argues that all the dogs are not being held to one standard and the dogs appearances are being dictated by the breeder and not by a governing body. They beleive that if you truly are breeding to a set standard in each individual class the dogs will eventually become uniformed in appearance. They feel that In the ABKC, the breeders are NOT breeding to produce the standard, breeders are breeding to out-do the next breeder and keep 'pushing the envelope.

RAW ALL NATURAL DIET VS. COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD

Posted by LEE BOOTH on March 26, 2011 at 8:33 AM Comments comments (3)

Some Dog owners feel that the best platform for the health of your pet is to feed it an appropriate raw diet. They say this is a diet that is designed for a carnivore and any diet that comes from a can, a packet, is designed for an omnivore and  is not healthy for your dog. Some beleive they need to  feed a diet which is based on the "prey model". Their argument is a dog in the wild would feed on whole raw prey, or scavenge parts thereof. They claim benefits of feeding all natural Include:

1. No doggy odor.2. Naturally cleans teeth 3.Much less stools produced.4.Less cost for dog foods.5. Mirrors what a dog would be getting in the wild.6. Puppies develop at a more appropriate rate - and quick growth spurts are avoided. 7. The ripping and chewing involved in eating raw meaty bones develops the jaw, neck, and shoulder muscles of the dog.

People who believe in commercial dog food point to the millions of dollars each year companies such as Purina, Iams, Hill’s, and Nutro spend on scientific and field testing of their products. They believe that commercial dog food contains all of the nutrients that a dog needs to grow and be healthy and that since the BARF diet is complicated, expensive, and difficult to prepare, many people do not properly understand it and are not appropriately feeding their dogs. They also say that the modern dog's digestive system is not able to process a raw natural diet correctly like a wild wolf or dog can.

Booth Kennels suggest whether you choose to feed your dog the BARF diet or commercial food, it is important to be educated on what a dog's nutritional requirements are. You should also consult your veterinarian for his recommendation on diet.

What Is It That Exactly Classifies Someone As Being A Back Yard Breeder?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on December 26, 2010 at 12:36 PM Comments comments (5)

1.One who breeds for color and appearance?

2.One who breeds for money?

3.One who breeds because they have "nice dogs that would make cute puppies?

4.One who Breeds unproven dogs?

5.One who Hangs papers?

6.One who Sells regularly to puppy stores?

7.Or is a Back Yard Breeder simply someone who hasn't established themselves as a reputable breeder, and will typically only have a couple of dogs and breed them together rather than seeking "the best" dog to compliment the bitch.

Pick a number that represents what you think qualifies someone to be labled as a Back Yard Breeder or give your personal input on what you think a BYB is?

How important are the Papers, more than the Dog?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on December 20, 2010 at 7:03 AM Comments comments (8)

Some people feel that papers are really not that important as long as the dog proves itself.I know a lot of people that think papers have become another prop to generate money and Real dogmen or family pets don't need papers, because simply being registered is not an indication of quality.

On the other hand papers are a good thing if you are looking for uniformity out of the pups handed down from generations.By not having papers and really not  knowing the lineage of a dog how would you know in what direction to take his  breedings?Another important aspect of registries is their role in sponsoring or sanctioning dog events, such as conformation, obedience, weight pull, herding, agility and other many other sports.

In my opinion I would never purchase a dog without papers. Here at Booth Kennels paper's are a very important tool in our breeding process and without them we would be shooting blindly in the dark ,but I do respect old Dog men who have been breeding dogs for decades and know what they got.

If the dog has qualities or capabilities that you like, and want to breed for should you purchase a dog without papers, what is your opinion on this topic?

Is Line Breeding Good Or Bad For The Overall Health Of Dogs?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on December 17, 2010 at 2:13 PM Comments comments (4)

Linebreeding is a method that breeders will use to improve upon and try to eliminate structural and health problems from their dogs.

Many show dog breeders seem  to know the dangers of line breeding dogs, and in fact, hotly defend the practice.Motivated by trying to produce the perfect dog that conforms exactly to the associated breed standards, such breeders deliberately breed outstanding show animals back to their close relatives in order to both stabilize and stamp their line with its special characteristics.

But Some people feel that  line bred animals are more prone to not only genetic defects, but also poor reproductive performance, have smaller litters and are simply not as robust and long-lived as out-bred animals.

In my opinion dogs should have proper genetic health tests done, and the breeder should be familiar with the bloodlines and know what health issues and faults are in the lines, linebreeding can be a useful tool to breed away from health issues if its done right.

DOES NEGATIVE MEDIA CAUSE SOCIETIES DISLIKE OF PIT BULLS?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on November 16, 2010 at 9:50 AM Comments comments (3)

You don't need to look very hard or be very bright to come to the conclusion that pit bull attacks sell papers. The ASPCA issued a statement that the media has repeatedly told them that they have no interest in reporting attacks involving non-pit-bull-type dogs.

The Pit Bull was so popular in the early 1900's they were our mascot not only in World War One, but World War Two as well.Sgt. Stubby,A Pit Bull war hero  was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy.

So News Reporters,News Papers and TV Stations why don't you cover a story about Pit Bulls and every time There's a fatal dog attack if the culprit is not a pit bull the Media and the public seems to forget about the story rather quickly and the story never makes it out of the state. Why don't you make a story about the prejudice against these Dogs and tell the public that Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That's better than the popular Border Collie (a breed who scores 79.6%.)

Should We Be Allowed To Game Test Our Dogs?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on November 9, 2010 at 9:33 AM Comments comments (4)

See a lot of people who are true breed lovers want to preserve the breed in every way they can. What makes this breed so great is the power of them to be game. The ONLY way to prove a dog is actually game is to pit it against another dog in a fight. The fights are controlled, the dog would only fight once to prove its worthiness that it is truly game not several times for money or anything like that. Some people believe this is the only way to test the dogs for gameness me personally I do not participate in this procedure but I do get their argument. Now remember dog fighting is illegal in most countries.

So what is your opinion on Game Testing do you think this is a safe practice and should it be allowed to happen in order to preserve the original gameness in the true American Pit Bull Terrier?
