American Pit Bull Debate

Are Treadmills only used to get dogs ready to fight?

Posted by LEE BOOTH on November 30, 2010 at 9:09 AM

Many responsible owners utilize treadmills to help exercise their dogs. This is useful in places where weather prevents outdoor exercise, or in situations where off-leash exercise in not an option.

The treadmill is used by people that show their Pit Bulls, and do sporting activities like weight pull and agility to help keep their dogs in shape. Because Pit Bulls are athletic animals, responsibly using a treadmill can help them be healthier and happier.

How do you feel about this assumption?

Treadmills are a GREAT form of exercise for dogs, especially pibbles! I walk/jog with mine every day, go to the park 2-3 times a week, and I live on the lake so they are swimming, when weather permits, and they are so active I have to keep them on High fat high protein diet, or puppy food to keep their weight up. If weather is bad, or say something happened to you, whether your sick, surgerey, or just unable to go outdoors and walk your dog, you can always hook the dog up to a treadmill and they still get their exercise. Remember a bored dog full of energy is a destructive dog!

I wish I had one because I am needing a form of excercise now for my Mia. Sometimes the outside weather just doesnt permit and it would really help so that she doesnt get overweight. All I do know is let her play with my roomies Siberian Husky and we play human springpole where I stand in a chair with her tugtoy.

We have an 8 ft privacy fenced yard, and we take both of our dogs on long hikes on the weekends (except when it's thundering/lightning.) However, several friends of ours have treadmills to exercise their Pit Bulls so no, treadmills aren't solely used for fighting dogs. However, it seems as though people are quick to assume "treadmill = obvious dog fighter" without bothering to find out more information (as is generally the case in everything concerning our breed.)
